Young Student Hurt in Classroom Gun Accident

A second-grade student was treated for a hand injury after a firearm he brought to class accidentally discharged at Freetown Elementary School in Glen Burnie, Maryland, early Wednesday morning. The incident happened shortly after classes began, prompting a swift response from school staff and law enforcement.

Emergency responders were called to the school around 8:30 a.m., and the injured 7-year-old was taken to a trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials confirmed no other students or staff were hurt during the accidental discharge.

Teacher Secures Weapon and Students Sent Home Early

According to police, the classroom teacher quickly took control of the firearm and provided assistance to the injured student until first responders arrived. Authorities say there were about 15 other students in the room at the time, but none were harmed.

The school implemented a temporary lockdown as a safety precaution, and administrators dismissed students early at 11:15 a.m. to allow parents to pick up their children safely. Crisis counselors were made available to support students and staff affected by the event.

Ongoing Investigation Into How Gun Was Brought to School

Law enforcement detectives are investigating how the child obtained the firearm, with early indications suggesting it may have come from his home. Police have emphasized the importance of safe storage and responsible firearm handling as they continue to gather information and interview witnesses.

Officials say normal classes are expected to resume the following day.
