Investigation Reveals Widespread Abuse Claims at Interlochen Center for the Arts

A newly released independent investigation has uncovered decades of alleged sexual misconduct at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, exposing nearly 70 allegations involving 47 former faculty members, staff, and associates dating from the 1950s through the 2010s.

The investigation, conducted by an outside law firm over approximately two years, gathered testimony from former students and campers who described incidents ranging from grooming and inappropriate physical contact to sexual abuse. Investigators characterized the findings as deeply disturbing and said the reports reflected long-standing institutional failures that allowed misconduct to continue for years.

Jeffrey Epstein Named in Multiple Allegations

The report also includes allegations involving convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who had previously been a financial supporter of the school. Two former attendees claimed they experienced inappropriate sexual behavior involving Epstein during the 1990s and early 2000s.

According to the investigation, Epstein maintained ties to the institution for years through donations and scholarship funding. Some allegations describe students being introduced to him under the promise of educational opportunities before inappropriate conduct allegedly occurred. Investigators noted that similar accounts have appeared in previous federal records and court proceedings.

School Responds and Announces Continued Reforms

School leadership acknowledged the seriousness of the findings, expressing regret to survivors and emphasizing that the institution has undergone significant changes in its policies, culture, and student safety practices over recent years.

Officials stated that none of the individuals identified in the report remain employed by the school. The names of those accused have also been provided to law enforcement authorities for review where appropriate.

The investigation began after earlier allegations against a former faculty member prompted a broader examination of historical misconduct. Administrators said the report is intended to provide transparency, recognize survivors’ experiences, and strengthen protections for current and future students.
