A major security operation near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire has raised international concerns after five British nationals were arrested in connection with suspected terrorism and explosives offences. The men were later released on bail under strict conditions, while investigators continue examining what happened and whether the incident had any connection to a foreign state.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described the incident as extremely serious and said a foreign actor was clearly involved. However, he did not identify the country allegedly connected to the suspected plot or provide evidence publicly to support the claim.
Five Suspects Arrested Near RAF Fairford
The security operation began in the early hours of Sunday after three vans were reported in suspicious circumstances near the village of Whelford, close to RAF Fairford.
Five men, all British nationals from London and aged between 23 and 25, were arrested by counter-terrorism officers. The incident triggered a significant emergency response, including the evacuation of residents from around 85 households and the deployment of specialist bomb disposal teams.
Investigators initially suspected that the vehicles could contain explosive materials. However, subsequent examinations indicated that the material found was not viable explosives.
Despite the release of the suspects, UK Counter Terrorism Policing has stressed that the investigation remains active. The five men remain under stringent bail conditions as detectives examine multiple lines of inquiry.
Rubio Raises Possibility of Foreign Involvement
Speaking about the incident, Marco Rubio said the events near RAF Fairford represented a serious threat and claimed that the involvement of a foreign actor was clear.
Rubio did not name a specific country. He did, however, refer to Iran and its previously stated threats against US interests around the world. He also said additional information about the incident could emerge in the coming days.
US President Donald Trump has also expressed concern about the decision to release the suspects on bail. Trump said he was surprised by the move and indicated that he would have preferred the suspects to remain detained.
British authorities have maintained a more cautious position. Laurence Taylor, head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing, said investigators are keeping an open mind and examining every possible explanation, including whether individuals could have been acting knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign state.
Iran Denies Any Role as Investigation Continues
Iran has rejected suggestions that it was connected to the incident. The Iranian embassy in London has dismissed claims of Iranian involvement as unfounded.
RAF Fairford has attracted particular attention because of its strategic importance and its use by US military forces. The base has also been connected to US military operations involving Iran, increasing concerns about possible threats against the facility.
Authorities are now working to establish the motive behind the activity near the base, the role of the five suspects and whether any foreign organisation or state was involved.
For now, British investigators have not publicly confirmed that the incident was directed by a foreign government. The investigation remains ongoing, with security officials continuing to assess evidence and intelligence surrounding the case.
