US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are meeting in Washington for high-level discussions covering some of the most sensitive issues in the US-China relationship, including artificial intelligence, trade, Taiwan and the war in Iran. Xi’s visit marks his first state visit to the United States in more than a decade, while the two governments are attempting to maintain a fragile period of economic stability.
Trump and Xi Begin High-Stakes Washington Talks
The meeting comes after an unusually prominent welcome for Xi, who arrived in the Washington area as part of his state visit. Trump personally greeted the Chinese president before the two leaders moved toward a full schedule of diplomatic meetings and ceremonial events.
Trade remains one of the most immediate issues facing the two countries. Washington and Beijing have been operating under a temporary trade truce that had been due to expire in November. The two governments agreed on Wednesday to extend the arrangement for another two months, providing additional time for negotiations.
The extension comes after a period of major tariff disputes between the world’s two largest economies. Both sides have previously imposed substantial restrictions on each other’s goods, while China has also used controls on important materials, including rare earths, that are significant to global manufacturing.
Artificial Intelligence Becomes a Major Point of Discussion
Artificial intelligence is another central issue in the Trump-Xi discussions. The United States and China are competing intensely over advanced AI technology, computing infrastructure and the development of increasingly capable systems.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously proposed creating a mechanism through which Washington and Beijing could notify each other about major AI-related incidents involving national security. The proposal was intended to increase communication and transparency between the two leading AI powers.
However, expectations for a formal agreement on AI safeguards remain limited. Trump indicated before the meeting that he expected so-called “super intelligence” to be discussed but did not appear to support restrictions on AI development.
The competing approaches reflect a wider technology rivalry between Washington and Beijing. The United States has imposed restrictions affecting advanced technologies and AI chips, while China continues to invest heavily in developing its domestic technology sector.
Taiwan and Iran Add Further Pressure to the Talks
Taiwan is expected to be another difficult subject during the summit. Beijing considers Taiwan part of China and has repeatedly opposed US military support for the self-governed island.
China has sought limits on American arms sales to Taiwan, while Washington continues to view Taiwan as an important element of its security policy in the Indo-Pacific. The issue has become increasingly sensitive as US-China strategic competition has intensified.
Iran is also expected to feature in the discussions. Trump wants China to use its influence with Tehran amid the continuing conflict involving Iran. Beijing, however, has maintained its own economic and diplomatic relationship with Tehran.
The combination of Taiwan, Iran, technology competition and trade means that the Washington summit covers issues extending well beyond the economic relationship between the two countries.
A Fragile Attempt at Stability
Despite the disagreements, both governments have an interest in preventing relations from deteriorating further. The extension of the trade truce gives negotiators additional time to work on outstanding economic issues, while direct communication between Trump and Xi could help manage disputes over technology and security.
The summit is therefore taking place against a backdrop of competition rather than a complete reset in relations. Trade negotiations, AI development, Taiwan and broader geopolitical disputes are likely to remain important parts of the US-China relationship in the months ahead.
