Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York on September 23, 2026, following his conviction for sexually assaulting former television production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. The sentence comes after years of appeals, retrials and legal proceedings surrounding the case.
Weinstein Receives 15-Year Prison Sentence
Manhattan Judge Curtis Farber sentenced the 74-year-old Weinstein to 15 years behind bars, followed by five years of post-release supervision. He will also be required to register as a sex offender. Prosecutors had sought a 20-year sentence, while Weinstein’s defense had requested a substantially shorter term.
The conviction relates to the sexual assault of Miriam Haley, who worked briefly as a production assistant on the television program Project Runway. Haley testified that Weinstein assaulted her at his Manhattan apartment in 2006.
During the sentencing hearing, Haley described the lasting impact of the assault and the years of legal proceedings that followed. Weinstein also addressed the court, expressing remorse for Haley’s suffering while continuing to maintain that he was innocent of the crime.
New York Case Followed Years of Appeals and Retrials
Weinstein was initially convicted in New York in 2020 of sexually assaulting Haley and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann. He received a 23-year prison sentence at the time.
However, New York’s highest court overturned that conviction in 2024 and ordered a new trial, finding that testimony concerning allegations outside the charges had improperly affected the original proceedings.
At a retrial in 2025, a jury again found Weinstein guilty of a criminal sexual act involving Haley. Jurors acquitted him of a separate charge involving former model Kaja Sokola and could not reach a decision on the rape allegation involving Mann.
A subsequent retrial concerning Mann’s allegation ended without a verdict in May 2026. Prosecutors later dropped that charge after Mann indicated she did not want to testify in another trial.
Weinstein Still Faces Legal Proceedings in California
The New York sentence is separate from Weinstein’s California case. He was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of rape and sexual assault and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
A California appeals court upheld those convictions in June 2026 but ordered that Weinstein be resentenced because the original sentencing judge had considered his now-overturned New York convictions as an aggravating factor.
Weinstein’s legal troubles began attracting worldwide attention in 2017 after numerous women publicly accused him of sexual harassment and assault. The allegations helped fuel the global #MeToo movement, which encouraged people to speak publicly about sexual misconduct and abuse of power.
Weinstein has consistently denied sexually assaulting women and has maintained that his sexual encounters were consensual. He is expected to appeal the latest New York conviction and sentence.
