FIFA Speeds Up Evaluation of 64-Team World Cup Plan

FIFA has moved forward with a rapid review of a proposal that could expand the 2030 FIFA World Cup from 48 to 64 participating nations. The governing body has started a consultation process to study the financial, sporting, and logistical effects of increasing the tournament size.

The review comes only weeks after the successful introduction of the 48-team format at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. If approved, the centenary edition of the tournament in 2030 would become the biggest World Cup in football history.

Study to Examine Financial and Sporting Impact

As part of the review, FIFA has invited independent experts to analyze how a 64-team competition would affect several key areas, including broadcasting revenue, sponsorship opportunities, ticket sales, tournament scheduling, player welfare, and the overall football calendar.

According to the current timeline, research proposals are expected within days, with the final report scheduled for delivery in September. The findings will help FIFA decide whether to move ahead with the expanded format for the 2030 competition.

Mixed Reactions Across World Football

The proposal has received strong support from South America’s football leadership, which believes a larger tournament would allow more nations to participate in the World Cup’s 100th anniversary celebration.

However, several major football organizations, including UEFA and CONCACAF, have expressed concerns. Critics argue that another expansion could reduce the quality of competition, place additional pressure on players, and create scheduling challenges for domestic and international football.

2030 World Cup Could Become the Biggest Ever

The 2030 FIFA World Cup is already set to be unique, with matches planned across Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Expanding the field to 64 teams would significantly increase the number of participating nations and matches, making it the largest edition of the tournament ever staged.

While FIFA has not yet made a final decision, the fast-tracked review indicates that discussions are progressing quickly. Football fans, national associations, and tournament organizers will now await the results of the ongoing study before any official changes are confirmed.
