Police in Jackson, Mississippi, have arrested a second person in connection with the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, whose body was discovered hanging behind an abandoned home on Aug. 3. Authorities have also obtained an arrest warrant for a third suspect as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding her death.
Second Arrest in Tasia Fortune Investigation
Jackson police arrested 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and charged him with murder in connection with Fortune’s death. Lloyd appeared in court and was denied bond, according to reports.
The arrest follows the earlier detention of 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, who was arrested Sept. 11 and also faces a murder charge. Ratliff has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bond.
Investigators have provided limited information about Lloyd’s alleged role. Local reporting has indicated that witnesses directed investigators toward him and that he was allegedly seen involved in an encounter with Fortune before her death. Authorities have not publicly established all details surrounding that reported interaction.
Police Issue Warrant for Third Suspect
Authorities have also obtained an arrest warrant for a third suspect, although Jackson police have not released that person’s name or publicly detailed the alleged connection to Fortune’s death.
The warrant has been turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service for assistance. Police have also indicated that additional warrants could be issued as the investigation develops.
The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office has classified Fortune’s death as a homicide, but officials have not publicly released the precise manner or cause of death. Police have also not announced a possible motive or said that race was a factor in the killing.
Case Draws National Attention
The circumstances surrounding Fortune’s death have attracted significant attention because she was found hanging from a tree in Mississippi, a state with a long and painful history of racial violence and lynching.
Fortune was a Kentucky native and mother of four who had lived in Jackson for roughly a decade, according to relatives. Her mother, Christy Spivey, has spoken publicly about the devastating impact of her daughter’s death on the family and has urged people to allow investigators to establish the facts of the case.
The investigation remains ongoing, with two people now facing murder charges and authorities continuing their search for a third suspect. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
