One Person Killed in Jarosław Abbey Attack
A knife attack at a Catholic abbey in southeastern Poland on Thursday left one person dead and four others injured, according to Polish authorities. The incident took place at the Benedictine abbey complex in the town of Jarosław.
Police said they received a report of the stabbing at around 9:30 a.m. local time. Officers arriving at the scene found four men and one woman suffering from knife wounds.
The victims were taken to a hospital for treatment. Three of the injured men were initially reported to have serious injuries. Authorities later confirmed that one of the victims had died.
31-Year-Old Suspect Detained at Scene
Police detained a 31-year-old Ukrainian national at the site of the attack and recovered a knife. Prosecutors said investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials have not yet established a motive for the stabbing. Authorities are also examining how the attack unfolded inside the abbey grounds.
Polish media reported that some of the victims were members of the clergy, while others were laypeople. Police and prosecutors have continued investigating as officials work to establish the identities and precise circumstances involving all of the victims.
Investigation Underway After Deadly Attack
The stabbing occurred at the Benedictine Sisters’ monastery located within the abbey complex on Benedyktyńska Street in Jarosław. The historic site is in Poland’s southeastern Podkarpackie region, relatively close to the country’s border with Ukraine.
Emergency services responded quickly, while police secured the area and began gathering evidence. Prosecutors were also sent to the scene as part of the investigation.
Local authorities have announced measures following the attack, including a period of mourning in Jarosław. Officials have also been providing support to people who witnessed the incident.
Investigators have not announced a confirmed motive, and the circumstances surrounding the attack remain under examination.
