At least 27 people have been killed and 26 others injured in two separate mass shootings in South Africa within a few hours, according to police. The attacks took place in townships near Johannesburg and Cape Town, with authorities searching for multiple suspects and no arrests reported so far.

17 Killed in Shooting at Wedela Bar Near Johannesburg

The first attack occurred late Saturday night at a bar in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg. Police said eight armed suspects carrying AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire on people gathered at the venue.

Seventeen people were killed in the shooting, including 13 men and four women. At least 15 others suffered gunshot injuries and were taken for medical treatment.

According to police, the attackers initially fired at people outside the bar before entering the premises and continuing the assault. The suspects reportedly searched some patrons and took their mobile phones before fleeing in two vehicles. Two vehicles were also set on fire near the scene.

10 Dead in Separate Lwandle Township Attack

About four hours later, another shooting was reported in Lwandle township near Cape Town.

Police said 10 people were killed and 11 others wounded when gunmen opened fire at a store connected to an entertainment venue. The shooting took place during the early hours of Sunday.

Authorities said multiple suspects were involved but did not immediately provide an exact number. Specialized police units were deployed to the affected areas as investigators searched for those responsible. No arrests had been announced in either attack at the time of the police statements.

Shootings Add to South Africa’s Growing Gun Violence Concerns

The latest attacks came only days after another mass shooting near Durban. On Tuesday night, multiple gunmen attacked a house party in KwaMakhutha township, killing 11 people, including a pregnant woman. Police had not announced arrests in that case either.

South Africa has faced high levels of violent crime for years, with gun-related killings particularly affecting poorer townships and informal settlements. Police and crime experts have also linked some mass shootings to organized criminal groups, gang disputes and the circulation of illegal firearms.

Official police figures recorded 5,427 homicides across South Africa during the three months ending June 30, an average of almost 60 killings per day. The government has also deployed soldiers alongside police in some high-crime areas as part of efforts to tackle violent and organized crime.
