Catholic Officials Accused of Delayed Response to Abuse Allegations
New details have revealed that Catholic Church leaders were aware of multiple complaints against former priest Anthony Odiong for several years before taking serious action. Documents indicate that concerns about his behavior were raised long before his eventual conviction and life sentence for sexual assault in Texas.
Odiong, originally from Nigeria, served churches in Texas and Louisiana and built a strong reputation among parishioners. However, several women later accused him of exploiting his position as a spiritual adviser and engaging in inappropriate and abusive relationships.
Complaints Continued While Ministry Assignments Were Extended
According to newly disclosed records, church officials had received reports of misconduct dating back years. Despite the allegations, Odiong remained active in ministry and even received extensions to his pastoral assignments.
By the time church leaders had spoken with women who described long-term abusive relationships, plans were reportedly being considered to keep him serving for several more years. Critics say church authorities failed to act quickly enough and allowed him to continue interacting with parishioners despite repeated warnings.
Survivors and advocates have argued that stronger action could have prevented additional harm.
Conviction Led to Life Sentence
The former priest’s legal troubles intensified after several women came forward with allegations. Investigators later gathered evidence showing that he had used his religious authority to manipulate and abuse women under his spiritual care.
In May 2026, a Texas jury found Anthony Odiong guilty on multiple sexual assault charges. He was sentenced to life in prison and additional concurrent prison terms.
The case has renewed criticism of how abuse complaints are handled within religious institutions. Survivors and advocacy groups are calling for greater transparency, accountability, and faster responses when allegations emerge.
Calls for Accountability Grow
Victims and supporters have questioned why previous complaints did not result in stronger disciplinary measures. Many believe institutional failures allowed the abuse to continue for years.
The controversy has sparked renewed discussions about safeguarding policies and the responsibility of church leaders to protect vulnerable individuals. Advocacy groups continue to push for reforms aimed at preventing similar cases in the future.
