As convicted Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann prepares for sentencing next week, his former wife, Asa Ellerup, has decided not to be present in court. According to her attorney, the decision was made out of respect for the victims and their loved ones.
Heuermann, a former New York architect, is scheduled to receive his sentence on June 17 after admitting to killing eight women. His guilty plea earlier this year brought an end to one of the most closely watched serial murder investigations in recent history.
Attorney Says Victims Should Remain the Focus
Ellerup’s lawyer stated that she believes the sentencing hearing should center on the victims, their families, and the lasting pain caused by the crimes. He explained that she does not want her presence to shift attention away from those seeking justice and closure.
The attorney added that Ellerup’s thoughts remain with the victims’ relatives as they continue the healing process after years of suffering.
Heuermann Admitted to Eight Murders
In April, Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven murders and acknowledged responsibility for an eighth victim. The killings occurred between 1993 and 2010, with many of the victims’ remains discovered across Long Island over several years.
Authorities arrested Heuermann in 2023 after investigators linked him to the long-unsolved Gilgo Beach murders through DNA evidence and burner phone records. The case had remained unsolved for more than a decade before the breakthrough.
Sentencing Set for June 17
The upcoming sentencing hearing is expected to bring a formal conclusion to the criminal case. Heuermann faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
