Luigi Mangione is expected to enter a guilty plea Friday in a federal case stemming from the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to people familiar with the proceedings. The anticipated plea could have significant consequences for Mangione’s separate criminal case in New York state, where he is scheduled to face a murder trial next month.
Mangione, 28, has been charged federally with stalking offenses connected to Thompson’s death. The case has drawn national attention since Thompson was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024.
Federal Plea Could Affect New York Murder Trial
Mangione’s potential guilty plea comes shortly before jury selection is scheduled to begin in his New York state case. He is accused in that case of second-degree murder and other offenses related to Thompson’s killing.
The federal prosecution initially included more serious charges, including offenses that could have exposed Mangione to the death penalty. Those charges were later dismissed following legal challenges, leaving the federal stalking counts as the central allegations against him.
Each of the remaining federal stalking charges carries the possibility of a life sentence if Mangione is convicted.
Double Jeopardy Issue Remains a Key Legal Question
Mangione’s attorneys have argued that prosecuting him in both federal and state courts raises constitutional concerns involving double jeopardy. A federal guilty plea could give his defense another basis to seek dismissal or otherwise challenge the pending state prosecution.
However, prosecutors in New York have indicated they are prepared to contest such an effort. The two cases are being pursued by separate governments, and prosecutors maintain that the charges and legal theories involved are distinct.

Thompson Killing Led to Major Manhunt
Thompson was shot outside a Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4, 2024, during UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference. The killing triggered a nationwide investigation and a five-day search for the suspect.
Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania several days later after employees at a McDonald’s recognized him from images circulated following the shooting. Authorities have alleged that evidence recovered after his arrest connected him to the killing.
Mangione has previously pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. His New York state trial is currently scheduled to begin Sept. 8, while the federal case had been headed toward trial early next year if no plea agreement was reached.
