Grand Jury Finds No Evidence of Criminal Conduct
A Mississippi grand jury has unanimously decided not to indict anyone in connection with the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, whose body was discovered near Horn Island two days after he went missing during a Fourth of July trip.
The Jackson County grand jury reviewed witness testimony, physical and digital evidence, cellphone records, GPS information, videos and investigative reports before returning a “no true bill.” The decision means prosecutors did not receive sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges based on the evidence presented.
Wells, who was from the Ocean Springs area, had traveled to Horn Island with friends to celebrate the holiday. He was last seen on the island on July 4, while his body was later recovered near the island on July 6.
Investigation Focused on What Happened on Horn Island
According to the grand jury findings, Wells traveled to the island aboard one of three boats used by the group. Investigators concluded that he remained on Horn Island after the boats left for the mainland.
The investigation included testimony from 43 witnesses and a review of extensive evidence. Authorities also examined GPS data, phone records, surveillance footage and other materials connected to the trip.
The grand jury found no credible evidence that people who traveled to or from Horn Island aboard the boats committed a crime connected to Wells’ death.
Questions surrounding the case had received widespread public attention, particularly because Wells was Black and some early claims circulating online focused on the racial makeup of the group. Investigators said they found no evidence that Wells’ disappearance or death was racially motivated.
Cause of Death Remains Undetermined
Although the grand jury determined that the circumstances surrounding the discovery of Wells’ body were consistent with drowning, the official cause and manner of death remain undetermined.
The Mississippi chief medical examiner and an independent forensic pathologist retained by Wells’ family both reached the conclusion that the cause and manner of death could not be definitively established. Drowning was considered a possible explanation, but described as a diagnosis of exclusion.
Investigators also examined an injury to the back of Wells’ head. The grand jury found that the bruising was not fatal and found no evidence of a fatal physical injury or underlying disease. A witness reported that Wells had slipped awkwardly from a boat earlier that afternoon but continued socializing afterward.
The investigation also found no cocaine in Wells’ system, contrary to claims that had circulated online.
Case Could Be Revisited if New Evidence Emerges
The grand jury’s decision closes the current criminal investigation without an indictment, but authorities noted that Mississippi has no statute of limitations for homicide cases.
If credible evidence emerges in the future indicating that Wells’ death was not accidental, the matter could be presented to another grand jury for consideration.
