More than three decades after 10-year-old George “Junior” Burdynski disappeared from his Maryland neighborhood, authorities have charged a 61-year-old man in connection with the boy’s death.
Joseph Lynch, who lived in the Brentwood neighborhood at the time of Burdynski’s disappearance, was charged with second-degree murder, second-degree rape, second-degree sex offense and third-degree sex offense, according to Prince George’s County authorities. Burdynski’s remains have never been recovered.
The development follows a renewed investigation that produced a witness account linking Lynch to the circumstances surrounding the boy’s disappearance in May 1993.
George Burdynski Disappeared While Riding His Bicycle
Burdynski, affectionately known as “Junior,” was last seen on May 24, 1993, while riding his bicycle through his Brentwood neighborhood in Prince George’s County.
His disappearance triggered a major search involving local authorities, federal investigators, emergency personnel and community members. Despite extensive efforts, investigators were unable to locate the boy or determine what had happened to him for more than 30 years.
The case remained open as detectives continued examining leads and information connected to Burdynski’s disappearance.
During the original investigation, authorities also uncovered allegations of sexual abuse involving several boys in the Brentwood, Mount Rainier and Hyattsville areas. Lynch and two other men, Stephen Bruce Leak and James Kowalski, were subsequently prosecuted in connection with those cases.
New Witness Account Leads Investigators Back to Cold Case
The latest breakthrough came while detectives were investigating separate allegations involving Lynch.
In May 2026, Lynch was charged with sexually abusing two teenage boys in incidents that allegedly occurred between 2007 and 2014. He also remained in custody in connection with a 2012 arson case.
As part of that investigation, members of the department’s Cold Case Unit interviewed a man who was 13 years old when Burdynski disappeared. Now 47, the man told investigators that he had been inside a home with Burdynski and Lynch on the day the child vanished.
According to investigators, the witness provided information about an assault involving Burdynski and said the boy was killed. Police subsequently presented the case to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, leading to the new charges against Lynch.
Authorities have not recovered Burdynski’s remains, and Lynch is currently the only person charged in connection with the boy’s death.
Family Says 33 Years of Hope Have Ended
For Burdynski’s family, the new charges bring an answer to a mystery that had remained unresolved for 33 years, but the development has also brought renewed grief.
At a news conference, Burdynski’s sister, Virginia, spoke directly about the devastating revelation and the family’s long-standing hope that Junior might somehow still be alive.
Authorities continue to investigate whether Lynch could be connected to additional victims. Detectives believe there may be other people who experienced abuse involving Lynch, either during the 1990s or after his release from prison in 2006.
The investigation remains active, and police are encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
The Burdynski case also had a wider impact on law enforcement. During the original investigation, authorities discovered that individuals connected to child sexual-abuse cases were using computers to communicate. The FBI later said that investigative work associated with the case contributed to early online undercover efforts that eventually became part of its nationwide Innocent Images program.
