An Israeli man in his 30s was killed in a shooting near the West Bank settlement of Neve Tzuf, also known as Halamish, on Sunday, September 20, shortly before the start of Yom Kippur. The suspected attacker reportedly opened fire from a vehicle at people gathered near a natural spring before fleeing the area. Israeli security forces later located and detained the suspect at a hospital in Ramallah.
Shooting Near Neve Tzuf Triggers Security Operation
The attack occurred in the northern West Bank as people were visiting a spring near Neve Tzuf ahead of the Jewish Day of Atonement. The victim, identified by Israeli authorities as Netanel Shukrun, was initially reported to be critically injured before being pronounced dead at a hospital.
According to Israeli military officials, the suspected gunman escaped from the scene after the shooting. Security forces launched a search operation, established roadblocks and pursued the suspect. Israeli authorities later said the suspect was found at a hospital near Ramallah and taken into custody.
The incident came amid heightened security concerns in the West Bank, where violence involving Israeli forces, Palestinian attackers and settlers has continued to increase since the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023.
Palestinian Motorist Killed in Separate Incident
A separate confrontation was reported later in the northern West Bank near the settlement of Ganim. The Israeli military said soldiers opened fire on a Palestinian driver who attempted to ram troops with a vehicle. No Israeli soldiers were reported injured.
The military said the driver was killed during the incident and that another person who had been in the vehicle was being sought. The circumstances surrounding the alleged attempted ramming could not immediately be independently verified.
Authorities have not established whether the two incidents were connected. Both occurred on the eve of Yom Kippur, a major Jewish religious observance.
Israeli Government Orders Increased Security Measures
Following the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed security agencies to increase their presence in the area and conduct additional arrests and military operations.
Hamas praised the shooting but did not claim responsibility for the attack. The latest violence comes against the backdrop of continuing unrest in the West Bank, including Palestinian attacks, Israeli military raids and attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.
The developments have added to security concerns in the occupied West Bank as regional tensions remain high and diplomatic efforts continue elsewhere in the Middle East.
