An Israeli man in his 30s was critically wounded in a shooting attack in the northern West Bank on Sunday, September 20, as heightened security tensions continued across the region ahead of the Yom Kippur holiday. Israeli forces launched a search for the suspected attacker and established roadblocks in the surrounding area.
The shooting came amid a broader increase in violence in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli military operations and attacks involving Palestinians and Israeli settlers have continued to raise tensions.
Israeli Man Injured in Northern West Bank Shooting
The shooting occurred Sunday morning near the West Bank settlement of Neve Tzuf, also known as Halamish. According to the Israeli military, the suspected attacker fired from a vehicle before escaping on foot.
The injured man, aged about 30, was taken for medical treatment in critical condition. Israeli security forces launched a manhunt and established checkpoints and roadblocks as they searched the area for the suspect.
The incident happened only hours before Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, adding to security concerns in the area.
Earlier, Israeli troops had carried out a large security operation in the northern West Bank town of Al-Mughayyir. Palestinian officials said at least 28 people were detained during the operation.
Violence Continues to Increase in the West Bank
The latest shooting occurred against a backdrop of escalating violence across the West Bank. The territory has experienced repeated Israeli military raids, Palestinian attacks and an increase in attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.
The heightened violence has continued since the October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military campaign in Gaza, with security conditions remaining volatile across several parts of the region.
The shooting near Neve Tzuf was also reported alongside another security incident in the West Bank. Israeli forces said they killed a Palestinian driver who they believed had attempted to ram soldiers near the settlement of Ganim. No Israeli soldiers were reported injured in that incident. It was not immediately clear whether the two incidents were connected.
Regional Tensions Extend Beyond the West Bank
Elsewhere in the Middle East, Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait condemned a Houthi ballistic missile attack targeting Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh.
Saudi authorities said the missile was intercepted. Residents reported hearing an explosion, while smoke was seen in the vicinity of the airport. Authorities reported no casualties or significant damage from the attack.
The three Arab countries described the attack as a threat to regional security and stability and expressed support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and civilian protection.
The developments underline the continuing security challenges across the Middle East, with violence and military confrontations occurring in multiple areas as regional tensions remain elevated.
