BAMAKO — Mali’s transitional President Assimi Goita has granted a presidential pardon to French national Yann Vezilier, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in June over allegations that he was involved in a plan to destabilise the West African country.

The decision was announced on Thursday, August 13, marking a significant development in a case that had added further strain to already tense relations between Mali and France. Vezilier was accused by Malian authorities of working on behalf of French intelligence services as part of an alleged effort to undermine the country’s transitional government.

French National Accused of Destabilisation Effort

Vezilier, who was associated with the French embassy in Bamako, was detained in Mali in August 2025. Malian authorities alleged that he had links to a wider effort involving soldiers and civilians aimed at disrupting state institutions.

A Malian court sentenced him to 20 years in prison in June after finding him guilty in a case involving alleged threats to state security. The proceedings became a major source of diplomatic tension between Bamako and Paris.

France had rejected the accusations against its national, while the case remained closely watched because of the deteriorating relationship between the two countries.

Presidential Pardon Does Not Overturn Conviction

Although Goita has pardoned Vezilier, the decision does not cancel the conviction or the findings of the Malian judicial process. Authorities said the French national must leave Mali immediately.

The pardon therefore ends his imprisonment but does not amount to an acquittal. The move comes after diplomatic efforts involving a third country, according to reports surrounding the case.

The development could help reduce one of the more sensitive points of friction between Mali and France, although wider disagreements between the two governments remain.

Mali-France Relations Remain Strained

Relations between Mali and France have deteriorated sharply since the military took power in Bamako. Mali’s ruling authorities have moved away from its former close relationship with France while strengthening ties with other international partners.

The Vezilier case had further intensified those tensions, particularly because Malian officials publicly linked the allegations to French intelligence operations.

The latest presidential pardon could provide some diplomatic relief, but the broader relationship between Mali and France remains complicated by security, political and regional disputes.
