A US federal judge has dismissed the criminal case against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, bringing an end to a closely watched legal battle involving allegations of bribery and fraud linked to solar energy projects in India.
US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis on Monday approved the Justice Department’s request to dismiss the charges against Adani and other defendants. The decision followed the department’s move to abandon the prosecution, although the judge expressed concerns about the government’s reasoning and the process behind the decision.
Adani and his group have consistently denied wrongdoing. The dismissal represents a significant legal development for the Adani Group and removes the criminal case that had remained a major issue for the conglomerate since the charges were filed in 2024.
Justice Department Moves to End Adani Prosecution
The case centered on allegations that Adani and associates were involved in a scheme to pay more than $250 million in bribes to Indian officials in connection with solar power contracts. US prosecutors also accused the defendants of misleading investors about anti-corruption practices.
The Justice Department later decided that it would no longer pursue the criminal prosecution. Prosecutors argued that the case was largely foreign in nature and presented difficulties in establishing a violation under US law.
Judge Garaufis ultimately granted the government’s request to dismiss the indictment. The dismissal was made with prejudice, meaning the criminal charges cannot simply be brought again in the same form.
The judge nevertheless raised concerns over the decision-making process within the Justice Department. He noted that his authority to challenge prosecutors’ decision to abandon a case was limited, while also making clear that the circumstances surrounding the dismissal deserved public scrutiny.
Gautam Adani Welcomes Court Decision
Gautam Adani has denied the allegations throughout the proceedings and welcomed the dismissal of the criminal case.
The billionaire said his confidence in truth, fairness and the rule of law remained strong during the legal proceedings. The Adani Group has also maintained that it did not engage in the alleged misconduct.
The criminal case was separate from other legal matters involving Adani and his companies in the United States. Adani had previously agreed to resolve related civil allegations by making a payment of $6 million, while his nephew Sagar Adani agreed to pay $12 million. Adani Enterprises also reached a separate settlement involving allegations related to US sanctions on Iran.

The conclusion of the criminal prosecution removes one of the most significant legal uncertainties facing Gautam Adani and his business empire in the United States.
The development has also drawn investor attention. Shares of several Adani Group companies moved higher after news of the dismissal, reflecting improved sentiment surrounding the group’s legal position.
The case had attracted international attention because of Adani’s position as one of India’s most prominent business leaders and the scale of the alleged solar energy transactions.
