Woman Critically Injured in Shark Attack Near Sydney
A woman swimming near Sydney’s popular Coogee Beach was seriously injured after being attacked by a large shark on Saturday morning. The 35-year-old swimmer was about 30 meters from shore with friends when the attack occurred.
Despite severe injuries, she managed to stay afloat and grab onto a lifeguard’s paddleboard as help arrived. Emergency crews and bystanders quickly assisted in bringing her safely back to the beach before she was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
Lifeguard and Bystanders Help Save Victim
An off-duty lifeguard who was nearby rushed into the water with a paddleboard after noticing the commotion. Witnesses said the shark briefly pulled the woman underwater before she resurfaced and held onto the board.
Once on shore, an off-duty doctor and emergency responders provided immediate medical treatment. The victim suffered serious wounds to her arm and leg and underwent emergency surgery.
Authorities Increase Safety Measures at Beaches
Following the incident, local officials temporarily closed nearby beaches and introduced additional safety measures. Patrols, jet skis, and shark-monitoring drones have been deployed to improve surveillance in the area.
Experts say shark attacks remain uncommon, but authorities continue to review safety procedures as more people enjoy ocean activities across Australia. Residents have been advised to follow warnings and swim only in patrolled areas.
