China Detains US Academic Min Zin in National Security Case
Chinese authorities have confirmed the detention of Min Zin, a US citizen and prominent scholar focused on Myanmar affairs, over allegations related to espionage and threats to national security.
Officials said the United States Consulate in Guangzhou had been informed about the arrest. The detention follows reports that Min Zin disappeared after traveling to Kunming in southwestern China earlier this month.
The incident has attracted international attention because cases involving American citizens facing national security accusations in China are relatively uncommon.
Scholar Known for Myanmar Research
Min Zin is widely recognized for his work on Myanmar politics and regional relations. He leads the Institute for Strategy and Policy (ISP) Myanmar, a think tank that has published research on trade, diplomacy, and China’s role in Myanmar.
He previously participated in Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement and later settled in the United States. Reports indicate that he had traveled to China several times before his recent visit.
No detailed evidence regarding the allegations has been made public.
Human Rights Groups Raise Concerns
Several rights organizations have expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the detention and have called for greater transparency.
The case comes at a time when Washington and Beijing have been attempting to stabilize relations following recent diplomatic efforts between the two countries. Analysts say the arrest could become another sensitive issue in the already complex relationship between the world’s two largest economies.
