Ugandan Football Mourns the Loss of Captain David Owori

Ugandan football is in mourning following the tragic death of international footballer and Sports Club (SC) Villa captain David Owori, who passed away after being attacked during an alleged robbery near his home in Kampala.

According to police, the incident happened late on the night of August 4, when Owori reportedly confronted individuals attempting to steal his mobile phone and other personal belongings. The confrontation turned violent, leaving the footballer with critical injuries. He was rushed to hospital but died the following day despite receiving medical treatment. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the attack.

Attack Reportedly Followed Attempt to Stop Theft

Police say the 27-year-old footballer was assaulted after trying to stop suspected robbers from taking his valuables. Witnesses reported that multiple attackers repeatedly struck him before fleeing the scene.

People nearby found the injured player and transported him to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a specialist medical facility, where doctors were unable to save his life. Investigators are collecting evidence and working to identify those responsible for the fatal assault.

Football Community Pays Tribute

Owori was widely respected in Ugandan football, serving as captain of SC Villa and representing the national team, the Uganda Cranes. Throughout his career, he also played for clubs in Spain and Sweden, earning recognition for his leadership and dedication on and off the pitch.

Following his death, tributes poured in from football organizations, teammates, former clubs, and public officials. SC Villa described him as an inspirational leader whose passion and professionalism left a lasting impact on the club. Uganda’s football federation also honored his contribution to the sport, while national leaders called for a swift investigation and justice for his family.
