Mother Sought Police Assistance Before Family Tragedy

Australian authorities are investigating a heartbreaking suspected murder-suicide after a 36-year-old mother and her 23-month-old daughter were found dead near coastal cliffs in South Australia. Officials have also ended the formal search for the woman’s missing three-month-old son, saying expert assessments indicate the infant could not have survived the time that has passed.

Police confirmed the mother had visited a local police station one day before the tragic incident, where she spoke with officers. The following morning, a concerned friend contacted police, prompting a welfare check at her home. However, no one was found at the residence.

Abandoned Vehicle Led Police to Coastal Search

Less than two hours after officers checked the home, members of the public reported an abandoned vehicle with its engine still running near Cape Northumberland. Emergency crews later discovered the bodies of the woman and her toddler below nearby cliffs.

A large-scale search involving police, rescue teams, aircraft, and shoreline patrols was launched for the missing infant. However, severe weather conditions complicated the operation and limited access to several search areas.

Authorities have now concluded that, based on expert advice and the time elapsed, there is no realistic possibility that the baby survived either on land or in the water. While the formal search has ended, shoreline monitoring and inspections will continue in the coming days.

Police Rule Out Third-Party Involvement

Investigators are treating the deaths as a suspected murder-suicide and have stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting anyone else was involved.

Police have also spoken with the children’s father as part of the investigation. The case has now been referred to the coroner, who will determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The tragedy has deeply affected the local community as authorities continue their investigation into the events leading up to the incident.
