A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan’s southern Kyushu island on Tuesday afternoon, causing widespread damage, disrupting transportation, and triggering an extensive emergency response. Rescue teams are working to reach people believed to be trapped inside a partially collapsed shopping mall, while authorities continue assessing damage across the region.

The earthquake struck at approximately 4:27 p.m. local time at a shallow depth, producing intense ground shaking across southern Japan. A tsunami advisory was briefly issued before officials later canceled it after determining there was no major tsunami threat.

Shopping Mall Collapse Leaves Multiple People Trapped

One of the most serious incidents occurred at an Aeon shopping mall in Kashima Town, where part of the building’s upper floor collapsed. Emergency responders immediately launched search and rescue operations after reports indicated several people were trapped beneath the damaged structure.

Authorities have not confirmed the exact number of people affected, and rescue efforts remain ongoing as firefighters and specialized teams search through the debris. Officials are prioritizing the safe evacuation of survivors while assessing the building’s stability.

In another incident, several workers were reported missing after a chimney collapsed at a paper manufacturing facility in Yatsushiro, adding to the emergency response across the prefecture.

The earthquake caused significant disruption throughout Kumamoto and neighboring areas. Roads developed large cracks, several buildings suffered structural damage, and fires were reported in multiple locations.

Rail services were suspended after infrastructure damage, while a train derailment was also reported. Kumamoto Airport experienced operational disruptions, and mobile communication services were affected in some areas.

Power outages impacted tens of thousands of households, leaving many residents without electricity as utility crews worked to restore services. More than 60 aftershocks were recorded following the initial earthquake, prompting authorities to warn residents to remain alert for additional seismic activity.

Japanese authorities quickly activated emergency response measures, deploying rescue personnel, firefighters, police officers, and military units to the affected region. Thousands of residents were advised to evacuate as officials monitored damaged buildings and potential secondary hazards.
