Suspect Arrested After Devastating Fire at Historic Mississippi Synagogue

Jackson, MISS. — A person has been arrested following a severe fire that tore through parts of the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi, early Saturday morning. Officials are treating the blaze as a possible act of deliberate arson as federal and local agencies continue their investigation.

🔥 Blaze Breaks Out Before Dawn at Beth Israel Congregation

The fire erupted shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday at the Beth Israel Congregation — the largest synagogue in Mississippi and a longstanding spiritual center for the Jewish community. Flames heavily damaged the synagogue’s administrative offices and library, leaving charred ruins in their wake.

Thankfully, no congregants or first responders were injured during the incident, and bodies such as the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force are assisting Jackson authorities in determining the cause.

🚓 Arrest Made as Arson Investigation Continues

Jackson Fire Department investigators ruled the fire as intentionally set, and a suspect was arrested late Saturday evening. Fire officials, however, have not yet released the individual’s name or specified any charges.

Mayor John Horhn condemned the destructive blaze, calling acts targeting houses of worship “attacks on the broader Jackson community” and vowing thorough investigative efforts.

🕯️ Community History and Reaction

Beth Israel Congregation has deep historical significance — including a devastating Ku Klux Klan bombing in 1967 tied to civil rights activities. Despite past challenges, leaders emphasize resilience and community support.

Several Torah scrolls were damaged or destroyed, though notably a Torah that survived the Holocaust remained unharmed, synagogue officials reported. Outreach from local faith communities has been strong in the fire’s aftermath.
