Multiple regions across Ukraine have been plunged into extensive blackouts after large-scale Russian missile and drone attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. The strikes, occurring as winter temperatures fall below freezing, have cut electricity to residential and industrial areas, killed civilians and intensified hardship for communities already dealing with prolonged conflict.

In a campaign of aerial attacks that unfolded overnight and into Tuesday, Russian forces launched hundreds of drones and missiles targeting power plants, substations and grid facilities across Ukraine. At least three people—among them a young child—were killed in strikes that also damaged homes and critical infrastructure. Emergency power cuts have been enforced in many cities as temperature drops make heating a life-or-death concer.
Officials report that the assault disrupted generation and distribution systems, prompting Ukrenergo and other energy bodies to implement rolling blackouts to manage the crisis. Power remains unavailable or unstable in regions such as Rivne, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv and others as crews work to assess and repair the damage.
