Illinois Boater Faces Charges Following Deadly Fox River Collision
A 45-year-old Illinois man is facing serious criminal charges after authorities accused him of operating a pontoon boat while intoxicated and causing a fatal crash on the Fox River.
The incident happened on the afternoon of July 25 near the McHenry Dam in McHenry, Illinois. Investigators say the suspect was driving a 31-foot pontoon boat at a very high speed when it struck the rear of a 20-foot Crownline boat carrying several people.
A 48-year-old woman aboard the smaller boat suffered catastrophic injuries and died at the scene. Officials have not publicly released her identity.
Prosecutors Allege Alcohol and Reckless Boating Led to Tragedy
According to investigators, the pontoon boat collided with the smaller vessel before riding over it, causing severe damage. Emergency responders found the damaged boats near the crash site, while the pontoon eventually came to rest after running aground.
Authorities allege the operator had a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 0.200, significantly above the legal limit. Witnesses also reportedly told investigators that the man had been drinking throughout the day and was seen traveling at excessive speeds on the Fox River and nearby Chain O’ Lakes before the collision.
The suspect has been charged with:
- Two counts of aggravated DUI causing death
- One count of reckless homicide
Court Denies Pretrial Release
During the detention hearing, prosecutors argued that the defendant posed a danger to the public, pointing to his previous legal history, which allegedly includes multiple DUI charges, reckless driving offenses, and speeding violations.
A judge denied his request for pretrial release, ordering him to remain in custody while the case moves forward. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 5.
Law enforcement officials extended their condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized that waterways should remain safe places for families and recreational boaters. The investigation into the deadly crash remains ongoing.
