Former Black Power Member Says He’s Changed Life After Gang Shootings, Court Sends Him to Prison Apr 27 2026 11 06 57 AM 1

A former Black Power gang member has told a New Zealand court he has transformed his life following a history of violence, drugs, and gang involvement. Despite claims of rehabilitation and support from community members, the court ultimately ruled that the seriousness of his crimes required a prison sentence.

Claims of Change and Rehabilitation Presented in Court

The man, aged 37, told the court he had moved away from his past life of gang activity, which once revolved around violence, firearms, and drug dealing. He said he is now sober, focused on helping others, and committed to building a better future for himself and his family.

Supporters, including individuals from rehabilitation programs, appeared in court to back his claims, describing him as someone who had begun mentoring others trying to leave gang life behind. He also expressed intentions to remove gang-related tattoos and continue his recovery journey.

The judge acknowledged these efforts, noting the visible steps taken toward personal change. However, the court stressed that rehabilitation alone could not outweigh the gravity of past offences.

Violent Gang Incidents and Criminal Charges Detailed

Court proceedings revealed the man’s involvement in a series of serious incidents linked to gang tensions. One of the key events included a confrontation in South Auckland where gunfire was exchanged between rival gang members, placing lives at risk.

In a separate incident, he was accused of deliberately ramming a police vehicle while attempting to evade officers, causing significant damage. Authorities later discovered weapons and ammunition connected to the case.

The court also heard details of an aggravated robbery involving firearms and an assault, as well as possession of a substantial quantity of methamphetamine intended for supply. These charges highlighted a pattern of dangerous and high-level criminal activity.

Judge Balances Rehabilitation With Public Safety

While acknowledging the defendant’s efforts to turn his life around, the judge emphasized the need to prioritize public safety and accountability. The seriousness of the offences, particularly those involving firearms and violence, played a major role in the sentencing decision.

The court noted that although personal reform is important, it must be weighed against the harm caused to victims and the wider community. Gang-related violence continues to be a concern in New Zealand, with authorities working to reduce its impact.

Ultimately, the judge expressed regret but concluded that imprisonment was necessary, stating that the consequences of the crimes could not be overlooked despite evidence of change.
