Florida Homeowner Shocked After Unauthorized Driveway Removal
A Florida woman is seeking answers after discovering that her driveway had been partially demolished without her approval in what authorities believe was a sophisticated property-related scam.
The incident occurred in Sanford, Florida, where the homeowner returned to find heavy construction work had already begun on her property despite never requesting or approving any driveway replacement. Police have launched an investigation into the unusual case, which they believe involves fraudulent business transactions and international digital connections.
Fake Real Estate Representative Allegedly Hired Contractor
According to investigators, someone posing as a representative of a real estate company contacted a contractor and arranged for the driveway replacement. The contractor reportedly received a $15,000 check to cover the project, but the payment later bounced.
Authorities said the check was linked to a company registered in New Mexico. As investigators followed financial records and digital evidence, they traced online activity associated with the transaction to internet addresses in Nigeria.
Police noted that the contractor had not met the supposed client in person and began work without obtaining the required permit before tearing up the driveway.
Investigators Believe Homeowner Was Not the Intended Target
Detectives believe the homeowner may not have been the scam’s primary victim. Instead, investigators suspect the fraudsters intended to deceive the contractor into performing work based on fraudulent payment.
Officials also believe the property may have been selected because it was listed for sale, making it easier for scammers to impersonate someone connected to the home.
While the exact financial motive remains under investigation, authorities are examining whether the scheme was designed to pressure the contractor into refunding money or otherwise exploiting the fake payment arrangement.
Contractor Agrees to Cover Repair Costs
Following the discovery of the scam, the contractor initially maintained that the company had also been deceived. However, the homeowner later confirmed that the contractor agreed to reimburse the cost of repairing the damaged driveway.
The Sanford Police Department continues to investigate the case as officials work to identify those responsible and determine the full scope of the alleged fraud.
