Minnesota Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Deadly Attack on Democratic Lawmaker and Husband 5 1 4

Federal Court Hands Down Life Sentence in High-Profile Political Violence Case

A federal judge has sentenced a Minnesota man to two consecutive life prison terms, plus an additional 40 years, for carrying out a deadly attack that killed a senior Democratic state lawmaker and her husband while seriously injuring another state senator and his wife.

The sentencing follows the defendant’s guilty plea to multiple federal charges, including murder, stalking, and firearms offenses. The plea agreement spared him from facing the death penalty but ensured he will spend the remainder of his life behind bars.

Victims’ Families Deliver Emotional Statements

During the sentencing hearing, family members of the victims and survivors described the lasting emotional and physical impact of the attack. The courtroom heard powerful testimony about grief, trauma, and the lasting effects of politically motivated violence.

The deadly assault occurred in June 2025 when the attacker disguised himself as a police officer before targeting the homes of elected officials. State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, were killed, while State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette Hoffman, survived after suffering serious injuries.

Judge Condemns Political Violence

The court emphasized that attacks targeting public officials threaten not only individual lives but also democratic institutions. Prosecutors argued the sentence reflected the severity of the crimes and the deliberate planning involved in the attacks.

Authorities previously revealed that investigators found a list of numerous public officials in the suspect’s possession, raising concerns that additional lawmakers may have been targeted. The defendant also faces separate state criminal proceedings related to the case.
