A 5-year-old girl was fatally shot while riding in a vehicle with her mother and four siblings in northwest Harris County, Texas, authorities said. The shooting, which occurred late Saturday night, September 19, has been described by investigators as an apparent road-rage incident.
Jeremy Porter, 47, was arrested Sunday and charged with capital murder in connection with the death of 5-year-old Zah’Layah Walter. Two of her siblings also suffered injuries from shattered glass, although their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Family Vehicle Hit by Gunfire
The shooting happened at approximately 11:30 p.m. near Grant Road and Jones Road. Zah’Layah’s mother, Monica Hicks, was driving her five children home after visiting her mother when another vehicle allegedly opened fire.
Hicks said she heard what sounded like something passing by before her children began screaming. She later discovered that Zah’Layah had been struck.
The child was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Two of her siblings suffered injuries caused by shattered vehicle glass, according to authorities.
Suspect Located Through License Plate Technology
Investigators identified Porter after using automated license plate reader technology to trace the vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting. Authorities subsequently located the vehicle and arrested Porter on Sunday.
Court records cited by local reporting say Porter told investigators he believed the other vehicle had fired at him and was being driven erratically. Investigators found multiple apparent bullet impacts on the family’s vehicle.
Hicks, however, has said she did not cut off another driver, exchange words with anyone or otherwise have a confrontation before the shooting. The circumstances leading up to the gunfire remain part of the ongoing investigation.
Capital Murder Case Moves Forward
Porter remains in custody at the Harris County Jail following his arrest. Prosecutors have sought to keep him detained, while court proceedings are expected to continue.
The capital murder charge is an allegation, and Porter is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The death of Zah’Layah has left her family and community mourning. Her mother described the young girl as deeply loved as investigators continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
