Florida USPS Employee Accused of Stealing Lottery Winner’s Mail

A United States Postal Service (USPS) employee in Florida has been arrested after authorities accused her of stealing a winning lottery ticket from the mail and cashing it herself.

According to investigators, the case began when a lottery player purchased a winning ticket worth $2,600 and mailed it to a family member in South Florida to help cover funeral expenses. When the ticket never reached its destination, the buyer reported it missing, prompting an investigation.

Investigation Led to Arrest

Officials say the investigation was conducted jointly by the Florida Lottery Division of Security and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.

Investigators determined that the missing ticket had been redeemed at the Florida Lottery’s Miami District Office on June 19. The person accused of claiming the prize was identified as postal worker Lakaysha Lockhart.

Authorities allege that after being taken into custody, Lockhart admitted to stealing the winning ticket from the mail and redeeming the prize.

Multiple Criminal Charges Filed

Lockhart is now facing several criminal charges, including:

  • Grand theft
  • Mail theft
  • Dealing in stolen property
  • Filing a false claim for payment
  • Two counts of unlawful use of a two-way communications device

Officials said the alleged offenses occurred across multiple judicial jurisdictions, meaning separate legal proceedings may take place.

Lottery officials stated that protecting players and maintaining the integrity of lottery games remain top priorities, adding that cooperation between law enforcement agencies helped resolve the case.
