Alex Murdaugh Requests Independent DNA Analysis Before Retrial

Former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh has filed a request asking a judge to permit an independent Texas forensic laboratory to examine DNA recovered from beneath the fingernails of his late wife, Maggie Murdaugh.

The motion comes as Murdaugh prepares for a new murder trial after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his 2023 convictions in the killings of Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and their son, Paul Murdaugh, 22. The retrial is currently scheduled for April 2027.

Murdaugh, who remains in prison on separate financial crime convictions, argues that additional DNA testing could provide evidence supporting his defense.

Defense Says Unknown DNA Could Be Key Evidence

According to court filings, investigators previously identified DNA beneath Maggie Murdaugh’s left-hand fingernails belonging to an unknown, unrelated male. Murdaugh’s legal team claims no further effort was made to determine the identity of that individual.

His attorneys are asking the court to allow Othram, a Texas-based forensic laboratory specializing in advanced DNA analysis and forensic genetic genealogy, to conduct independent testing on the evidence.

The defense also expressed concern that if state investigators perform additional testing first, the limited DNA sample could be depleted, leaving insufficient material for independent examination. They have stated they are willing to pay the full cost of the requested testing.

New Trial Follows Supreme Court Decision

Murdaugh was originally convicted in March 2023 for the June 2021 fatal shootings of his wife and youngest son at the family’s hunting property in Islandton, South Carolina, and received life sentences for the murders.

However, the South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial in May 2026 after determining that improper actions by a court official may have influenced jurors during the original proceedings.

A hearing on the defense’s DNA testing request is scheduled for August 14, where the court will decide whether the independent forensic analysis can move forward.

While seeking to challenge the murder charges, Murdaugh continues to serve lengthy prison sentences after pleading guilty to numerous state and federal financial crimes unrelated to the homicide case.
