Tragic Shooting in Northwest Houston Leaves Woman Dead, Children Safe

HOUSTON — A woman was shot and killed Friday evening at an apartment complex in northwest Houston, while three young children inside the residence escaped without physical injury, authorities confirmed. The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. on January 16 in the 6200 block of W. Tidwell Drive following a verbal dispute that escalated into gunfire.

Details of the Incident and Police Response

Houston police responded to reports of gunshots near the apartment complex late Friday night. Neighbors reported hearing dozens of shots in quick succession. Officers arriving at the scene found the victim, later identified as 30-year-old Shyta Campbell, with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition and later died from her injuries.

Inside the apartment unit at the time of the incident were three children — an 8-year-old girl, a 6-year-old girl, and a 6-year-old boy — who were unharmed during the shooting, police said. Campbell did not live in that apartment and the children were not her own.

Police initially took a woman into custody on the night of the shooting, but she was later released. A male suspect was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, though authorities have not publicly disclosed his identity or charges as the investigation continues.

Family Reacts, Investigation Continues

Family members expressed deep grief over Campbell’s death. Her sister recalled speaking with her just days before the shooting and said Campbell had been planning to move forward with her life. Despite the devastating loss, her family said they are relying on faith as they await justice.

Houston police are actively investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting and urged anyone with information to come forward.
