Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sentenced to more than 4 years in prison after trial exposed mogul’s reign of terror
Sean “Diddy” Combs was sentenced Friday to more than four years in federal prison, marking a dramatic downfall for the hip-hop mogul after a scandalous trial that peeled back decades of abuse, violence and manipulation hidden behind his empire.
“You abused them, physically, emotionally and psychologically,” Judge Arun Subramanian told the 55-year-old music icon during a marathon six-hour sentencing hearing in Manhattan federal court. “Why did it happen for so long? Because you had the power and resources to keep it going, and because you didn’t get caught. A meaningful sentence is needed to protect the public from further crimes.”
Combs received a 50-month sentence, shorter than the five-to-six-year federal guideline recommendation and far less than the 11 years prosecutors had sought. Still, the punishment eclipsed the 14-month, time-served plea his legal team had argued for.
A Trial That Shocked
Jurors convicted Combs on prostitution charges in July after two months of disturbing testimony. Witnesses recounted his violent temper, humiliating rituals, and what prosecutors described as a “baby oil-drenched reign of terror.”
He was acquitted of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, which carried a possible life sentence.
Emotional Plea and Family Testimonies
Dressed in a wrinkled oatmeal sweater and black reading glasses, Combs appeared shaken as his children delivered impact statements from the podium.
Taking the stand himself, Combs issued a halting apology to victims — including ex-girlfriends Cassie Ventura and a woman identified only as “Jane” — but focused much of his 12-minute address on himself.
“My domestic violence will always be a heavy burden that I will forever have to carry,” he said, voice cracking. “I’m not this larger-than-life person. I got lost in excess, I got lost in my ego. But I’m trying my best. I’m asking for another chance.”
The Fall of a Mogul
Once hailed as a titan of hip-hop and fashion, Combs’ career and reputation unraveled during the trial. Prosecutors painted a picture of a man who used wealth and influence to control and abuse women, while maintaining a public image as a music innovator and entrepreneur.
