Kentucky Lottery Winner Faces Fresh Legal Trouble
James Farthing, the Kentucky resident who won a record-breaking $167.3 million Powerball jackpot, has been arrested once again, marking his fourth arrest since claiming the life-changing prize.
The 51-year-old Georgetown resident was taken into custody on July 26 and booked into the Scott County Jail. Authorities charged him with first-degree strangulation (domestic violence-related) and fourth-degree assault causing minor injury following an alleged altercation with a woman after a boating outing.
Court Orders Monitoring and No Contact With Alleged Victim
According to court records, investigators allege that an argument between Farthing and the woman escalated, during which he allegedly placed his hands around her neck and restricted her breathing.
Farthing appeared in court on July 28, where he entered a not guilty plea. The judge set his bond at $15,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the alleged victim. He was also instructed to wear an electronic monitoring device to help enforce the court’s no-contact order.
Fourth Arrest Since Winning Historic Powerball Jackpot
Farthing became widely known after winning Kentucky’s largest-ever Powerball jackpot in April. At the time, he publicly said he planned to share the winnings with his mother to help pay off family debts.
Since then, however, he has faced multiple legal issues. Just days after claiming the jackpot, he was arrested in Florida on allegations of assaulting a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. Additional legal matters have also followed in Kentucky, making this the fourth arrest linked to incidents after his lottery win. The latest domestic violence case remains pending as the legal process moves forward.
