Houston Family Files Lawsuit After Deadly Murder-Suicide
The parents of a Houston woman who was killed along with her two young children have filed a wrongful death lawsuit, claiming the children’s father secretly moved approximately $1.4 million before the fatal incident that shocked the community.
The lawsuit follows the deaths of Thy Mai Mitchell, 39, and her children, Maya, 8, and Maxwell, 4, who were found dead inside their River Oaks home on May 4. Authorities previously stated that the case appeared to be a murder-suicide in which Matthew Mitchell, 52, allegedly shot his wife and children before taking his own life.
Lawsuit Alleges Financial Transfers Before Killings
According to court filings, Thy Mai Mitchell’s parents allege Matthew Mitchell had been facing severe financial difficulties and feared possible legal consequences related to alleged fraudulent activities.
The lawsuit claims that, in the days leading up to the tragedy, Matthew worked with his mother and sister to transfer nearly $1.4 million from trusts and other financial accounts into accounts controlled by family members. The plaintiffs argue these transfers were intended to keep the money beyond the reach of potential creditors.
The complaint further alleges that after the deaths, the money was returned to its original accounts in an attempt to conceal the earlier transactions. The family is now asking the court to preserve those assets while the legal proceedings continue.
Ring Camera Recordings Cited in Court Filing
The lawsuit also references recordings allegedly captured by the family’s Ring security cameras during the days before the killings.
According to the filing, the recordings include statements attributed to Matthew Mitchell expressing concern about lawsuits, financial losses, and violent intentions. The complaint alleges these conversations demonstrate that the attack was planned in advance.
Alongside these recordings, the lawsuit also describes ordinary family interactions, highlighting the contrast between daily life and the events that followed.
Parents Seek Accountability and Justice
In addition to financial damages, the lawsuit requests restrictions on the handling of Matthew Mitchell’s estate and seeks to preserve assets connected to the family’s restaurant businesses while the case is pending.
The plaintiffs say their goal is not solely financial compensation but accountability for the deaths of their daughter and grandchildren. They argue that no legal outcome can undo the family’s loss, but they hope the court process will provide answers and justice.
