A sweeping independent investigation has revealed decades of alleged sexual misconduct involving former staff members, faculty, and other adults connected to the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. The findings describe a long history of reported abuse spanning from the 1950s through the 2010s, with more than 70 former students and campers sharing their experiences during the inquiry.
The investigation also examined the school’s historical ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, whose past relationship with the institution has drawn increased public attention in recent years.
Independent Report Details Widespread Allegations
The nearly 100-page investigation identified allegations involving 47 individuals who were connected to the school over several decades. According to investigators, reports included claims of grooming, inappropriate physical contact, sexual harassment, and sexual abuse.
Most of those accused are no longer associated with the institution, while several have died. Investigators stated that information gathered during the inquiry has been provided to local law enforcement authorities for review.
The investigation began after earlier allegations involving a longtime faculty member expanded into a broader examination of the school’s historical culture and safeguarding practices.
Epstein’s Connection Examined
Investigators also reviewed Jeffrey Epstein’s past association with the arts school. Epstein attended a summer program there as a teenager and later became a financial donor during the 1990s and early 2000s.
The report includes allegations from two former students who claimed Epstein engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior while connected to the institution. One allegation involved a lodge that previously carried his name before it was later removed and demolished as part of the school’s efforts to distance itself from him.
The investigation concluded that adults who were not school employees were, at times, given access to students without sufficient oversight.
School Promises Continued Reforms
School leadership described the investigation’s findings as deeply troubling and expressed regret to former students who reported abuse. Officials said the institution has significantly strengthened its child protection policies, supervision standards, background screening, reporting procedures, and student safety measures over recent years.
Leaders also stated that acknowledging the past is an important step toward rebuilding trust and ensuring a safer environment for future students.
