Pilots Killed After Small Passenger Plane Comes Under Fire on Landing in Papua 1000909624

Two flight crew members were killed on Wednesday after attackers opened fire on a small civilian aircraft during its landing at an airport in Indonesia’s remote Papua region, authorities confirmed. The incident, which left all passengers unharmed, has intensified concerns about security challenges in the area.

Attack During Landing at Korowai Airport

Local police report that the Smart Air Cessna Caravan, carrying 13 passengers in addition to the pilot and co-pilot, was struck by gunfire shortly after touching down at Korowai Airport in Boven Digoel, South Papua Province just after 11:15 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Crew Fatalities, Passengers Escape Injury

As the barrage of shots began, those onboard fled into a nearby patch of forest for safety. While all 13 passengers managed to escape without injury, both the pilot and co-pilot were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Authorities have not yet identified who was responsible for the attack. When questioned about potential links to separatist insurgents active in Papua, officials said the investigation is ongoing and no group has claimed responsibility.

Security Context in Papua Region

Indonesia’s easternmost provinces, including Papua, have long been marked by sporadic armed conflict between Indonesian security forces and various armed groups seeking greater autonomy or independence. Such clashes have periodically created volatile conditions, particularly in isolated districts where government presence is limited.
