Woman and Baby Rescued After Emergency Call
A North Carolina man has been arrested after investigators alleged that he kept a 24-year-old woman and her eight-month-old child captive for several weeks at a rural property.
Authorities said the case came to light when the woman managed to contact emergency services and reported that she was being held against her will. Deputies responded to the location and found both the woman and her infant safe.
The suspect, identified as 54-year-old James Bryan Peterson, was initially arrested on several charges related to assault and sexual misconduct. Further investigation later led to a series of additional felony charges.
Human Trafficking and Kidnapping Allegations
According to law enforcement officials, a search of the suspect’s property uncovered evidence that resulted in more serious accusations, including human trafficking, first-degree kidnapping, involuntary servitude, sexual servitude, and unlawful restraint.
Investigators believe the woman and her child had been held for over a month before the rescue. Authorities also allege that the victim was repeatedly threatened and abused during the period of captivity.
Officials stated that the woman was only able to seek help after being allowed outside briefly, giving her an opportunity to contact emergency responders.
Investigation Reveals Disturbing Details
Court documents indicate that the suspect allegedly used force and intimidation to control the victim. Investigators reported that the woman was subjected to repeated abuse while being prevented from leaving the property.
The woman and her child are believed to be originally from Honduras, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding their arrival in the United States.
Following the expanded investigation, Peterson was taken back into custody and remains jailed on a multi-million-dollar bond while awaiting further court proceedings.
Law enforcement agencies have stated that the investigation remains active and additional details may emerge as the case moves through the legal system.
