A 17-year-old girl was killed in a deadly sword attack at a school in central Sweden, police confirmed Saturday. The attack took place Friday at Brinell School in Fagersta, northwest of Stockholm, while classes were underway. Three other people were injured, including two who suffered serious injuries.
17-Year-Old Girl Identified as Fatal Victim
Swedish police confirmed that the person who died in the attack was a 17-year-old female student. Authorities said an 18-year-old man armed with a sword carried out the assault at the school.
Three other people were wounded during the incident. According to local authorities, two boys, aged 12 and 17, sustained serious injuries. Another person under the age of 18 suffered less severe injuries and was later released from the hospital.
The suspect was taken into custody and is being investigated on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Police have said there is currently no indication that anyone else was involved in the attack.
Police Investigate Motive Behind School Attack
Authorities have not yet announced a possible motive for the violence. Investigators have carried out searches at two properties connected to the suspect and are expected to speak with numerous witnesses.
Police officials said they were limiting the amount of information being released while the investigation continues, partly to avoid influencing witness statements.
The attack prompted an extensive emergency response in Fagersta, while nearby schools also took precautionary measures as authorities dealt with the situation.
Fagersta Community Mourns After Deadly Violence
The attack has left the local community in shock. On Saturday, around 70 people gathered at a temporary memorial outside the school, placing flowers and lighting candles in memory of the teenager who lost her life.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson also visited the memorial and expressed their support for those affected by the tragedy.
The deadly incident has renewed concerns about violence in Swedish schools. Sweden has experienced several serious school attacks in recent years, including a deadly attack at an education center in Örebro in 2025.
The investigation into the Fagersta school sword attack remains ongoing, with police continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the suspect’s possible motive.
