Swedish authorities are investigating possible online influences surrounding a deadly sword attack at a high school in the central town of Fagersta that left a 17-year-old girl dead and several other students injured.
The attack took place on Friday, August 21, at Brinell School while classes were underway. Police arrested an 18-year-old man following the incident, and prosecutors have ordered his detention on suspicion of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder.
Investigators are now examining whether the suspect had connections to online communities that promote or glorify violence in schools.
Police Examine Suspect’s Online Activity
A key part of the investigation involves the suspect’s potential activity on social media and other online platforms. Police are looking into whether an account on TikTok was connected to the 18-year-old.
The account reportedly shared an image of a sword shortly before the attack. Investigators are working to establish who controlled the account and whether its activity provides clues about the suspect’s intentions or possible influences.
Authorities are also examining online material referring to earlier mass attacks in Sweden and Norway. However, police have not established a definitive motive and have cautioned that the investigation remains ongoing.
Prosecutors said investigators are conducting interviews and gathering evidence as they work to reconstruct what happened before and during the attack.
Teen Girl Killed as Students Are Injured
The attack claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl, while other young people were injured. Two teenage boys were among those seriously hurt during the assault.
The incident triggered an immediate emergency response, with police securing the school and surrounding area. Nearby schools also took precautionary measures as authorities worked to determine whether there was any continuing threat.
The suspect was taken into custody after police responded to the school. Authorities later confirmed that he was not injured during his arrest, correcting earlier reports about his condition.
Fagersta Community Reels From Tragedy
The fatal attack has deeply affected Fagersta, a relatively small Swedish community. Flowers and candles were placed outside the school as residents, students and families mourned the victim.
Swedish political leaders also visited the area and expressed condolences to the girl’s family and those affected by the violence. The incident has renewed concerns about school safety and the potential role of online communities in encouraging young people toward violent acts.
Police are continuing to examine digital evidence, conduct interviews and investigate the suspect’s background. Officials have yet to announce a confirmed motive, and the investigation is expected to continue as authorities piece together the circumstances leading up to the attack.
