Driver’s Sentence Extended in Deadly Crash Case
A 21-year-old woman in the United Kingdom has received a longer prison sentence after an appeals court ruled that her original punishment was too lenient following a fatal road crash that claimed two lives.
The crash happened in December 2022 when the driver, who was 18 at the time, attempted to overtake several vehicles while traveling at nearly 100 mph on a road with a 60 mph speed limit. During the dangerous maneuver, her car collided with a taxi, triggering a multi-vehicle crash.
The taxi driver, Octavian Codreanu, died at the scene, while passenger Moyra Whelan later passed away in hospital due to severe injuries. Six other people were also hurt, with three suffering serious injuries.
Snapchat Videos Revealed Dangerous Driving
Investigators discovered multiple videos on the driver’s mobile phone showing her filming herself while speeding and driving recklessly before the fatal collision. Authorities said the footage demonstrated a pattern of dangerous behavior behind the wheel.
Court proceedings also revealed that she was driving between work locations at the time of the crash and did not have the appropriate insurance coverage for business use.
The driver had previously admitted to multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while uninsured, and causing serious injuries through dangerous driving.
Appeals Court Increases Prison Term
The woman was originally sentenced to six years and eight months in prison. However, government legal officials requested a review under the UK’s sentencing appeal process, arguing that the punishment did not adequately reflect the seriousness of the offense.
Following the review, the Court of Appeal increased her sentence by two years and seven months, bringing the total prison term to nine years and three months.
She also remains banned from driving for more than eight years and must successfully complete an extended driving test before being allowed to regain her license.
Officials expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and praised emergency responders for their efforts, while emphasizing that reckless speeding and distracted driving can have devastating and irreversible consequences.
