UN Calls for Equal Rights Amid Reported Arrests in Afghanistan
The United Nations has voiced concern over reports that women and girls in western Afghanistan have been detained for allegedly failing to comply with dress regulations enforced by Taliban authorities. The international body urged officials to uphold equal treatment and respect basic human rights.
Reports from Herat province indicated that multiple women were arrested following the implementation of stricter guidelines regarding what authorities described as proper Islamic dress.
Human Rights Concerns Intensify
According to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, the detentions have raised concerns about freedom of movement and equality before the law. The organization emphasized that both men and women should enjoy the same legal protections and rights.
Local reports suggested that the measures targeted women who appeared in public without fully covering their faces or while wearing makeup. Taliban officials had not publicly commented on the allegations.
Restrictions on Women Continue to Draw Criticism
Since returning to power in 2021, Taliban authorities have imposed a series of restrictions affecting women and girls. These measures have limited access to education, employment, sports, and other aspects of public life, prompting criticism from international organizations and human rights groups.
UN agencies have warned that prolonged restrictions could have long-term consequences for Afghanistan’s education and healthcare sectors, potentially leading to shortages of female teachers and medical professionals in the coming years.
