North Carolina Suspect Returned to West Virginia in Gretchen Fleming Case

Authorities have brought a 58-year-old suspect back to West Virginia after a grand jury indictment connected him to the death of 27-year-old Gretchen Fleming, who disappeared in late 2022. Investigators say the woman vanished after leaving a local bar, sparking a years-long search that eventually led to the discovery of her remains.

The suspect, Preston Pierce, was arrested in North Carolina and waived his right to an extradition hearing before being transferred back to West Virginia. He is currently being held without bond while awaiting a court appearance.

Grand Jury Files Multiple Charges

A Wood County grand jury indicted Pierce on charges including first-degree murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and improper disposal of a human body.

Fleming was last seen during the early hours of December 4, 2022. According to investigators, she left a Parkersburg establishment with Pierce and reportedly left behind her purse and wallet. Concern grew when she failed to contact relatives or friends for more than a week, leading to a missing-person report.

Human Remains Found Nearly Three Years Later

After extensive searches and forensic work, human remains discovered in Wirt County in September 2025 were positively identified as Fleming. Investigators later concluded that Pierce had been with her shortly before she vanished.

Law enforcement officials praised Fleming’s family for their patience and support throughout the lengthy investigation. Authorities have not yet announced a date for Pierce’s next court appearance.

Investigation Continues

Officials say the case remains active as prosecutors prepare for upcoming legal proceedings. The extradition marks a major step in a case that remained unresolved for years and brought widespread attention across West Virginia.
