Department of War Partners with OpenAI to Deploy Custom ChatGPT to 3 Million Personnel
WASHINGTON — The Department of War has announced a landmark agreement with artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI to deploy a custom version of ChatGPT to all Pentagon personnel. The deal, confirmed on Monday, will see the advanced large language model integrated into the department’s secure enterprise AI platform, GenAI.mil, granting access to approximately 3 million military and civilian employees.
This strategic partnership marks a significant escalation in the federal government’s adoption of commercial artificial intelligence. According to Department of War officials, the initiative is designed to streamline administrative workflows and enhance operational efficiency across the armed forces. The specific iteration of ChatGPT being deployed has been tailored for unclassified work, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected within authorized government cloud infrastructure.
“Integrating ChatGPT into GenAI.mil marks another critical step in making frontier AI capabilities the standard for daily operations,” the department stated in a press release. Officials highlighted that the tool will assist service members with a variety of routine tasks, including summarizing complex policy documents, drafting procurement and contracting materials, generating internal reports, and creating compliance checklists.
To address security concerns, OpenAI and the Department of War have implemented rigorous safeguards. The deployed model will operate in a distinct environment where data is isolated from the public. OpenAI has confirmed that no government data processed through this system will be used to train its commercial or public-facing models, a critical stipulation for defense officials wary of data leakage.
The integration of ChatGPT follows the department’s recent rebranding from the Department of Defense to the Department of War, a change directed by the current administration to signal a more aggressive posture in national security affairs. The GenAI.mil platform, which launched in late 2025, already hosts other major AI models, including Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok. The addition of ChatGPT is expected to significantly drive user adoption, which has already surpassed 1 million unique users since the platform’s debut.
Defense experts suggest this move represents a broader cultural shift within the military toward becoming an “AI-first” enterprise. By automating labor-intensive administrative burdens, leadership hopes to free up personnel to focus on higher-level strategic and mission-critical activities. While the current rollout is limited to unclassified networks, the department has signaled that successful implementation could lead to future pilots involving more sensitive datasets, pending further security accreditations.
