Utah Woman Faces Life Behind Bars After Guilty Plea in Parents’ Killings

A 30-year-old woman from Utah has been handed an effective life sentence after admitting to killing her parents in a deadly shooting that shocked the community. The court imposed consecutive prison terms following her guilty plea, closing a case that began with a violent break-in at a family home earlier this year.

Consecutive Life Sentences Handed Down

On Friday, December 19, Mia Bailey was sentenced to two consecutive terms of 25 years to life for the murders of her parents, Joseph and Gail Bailey. In addition, the court imposed a separate sentence of up to five years for aggravated assault. With the sentences ordered to run back-to-back, Bailey could remain incarcerated for the rest of her life.

Deadly Shooting at Family Home

Investigators say the killings occurred on June 18, 2024, after Bailey broke into her parents’ residence in Washington City. Authorities allege she shot her 70-year-old father twice in the head and fired four shots at her 69-year-old mother, causing fatal injuries to both.

Brother Targeted During Attack

After shooting her parents, Bailey allegedly moved through the house and fired rounds into a downstairs bedroom where her brother had locked himself inside with his wife. According to police statements presented in court, she admitted she was indifferent to whether the gunfire killed her brother.

Case Impact

The sentencing brings legal closure to a tragic case that devastated a local family and left lasting trauma for surviving relatives. Prosecutors emphasized the severity of the crimes, while the court noted the danger posed to multiple victims during the attack.
