Ukraine Seeks Stronger Security Guarantees from the U.S.

In a high-profile meeting at his Florida estate, U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled proposed security guarantees for Ukraine as part of ongoing efforts to negotiate an end to Russia’s war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while welcoming the initiative, urged for even more robust and extended protections to deter future aggression.

The proposed package is said to include security assurances lasting up to 15 years, a cornerstone of a broader 20-point peace plan, though Zelenskyy has publicly sought commitments stretching from 30 to 50 years for greater stability.

Key Sticking Points: Donbas, Zaporizhzhia and Lasting Peace

While Trump and Zelenskyy expressed optimism about progress, major obstacles remain in peace talks — particularly over control of the Donbas region and the fate of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Zelenskyy stressed that any security arrangement would need clear terms, ideally backed by referendums or parliamentary approval.

Ukrainian officials and Western partners believe that ironclad security assurances are essential before a lasting resolution can be achieved, but Moscow has so far resisted key agreements, especially regarding territorial boundaries and demilitarized zones.

Diplomatic Momentum, But Peace Not Yet Secured

The discussions in Florida also included a phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, with both sides characterizing the exchange as constructive, though disagreements persist. Trump described the situation as closer to peace than ever before, but acknowledged that “thorny issues” remain unresolved.

Zelenskyy reiterated that any peace deal must protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and said that additional multilateral talks involving European leaders may be scheduled in the coming weeks.
