Trump’s Pressure on Oman and South Korea Raises Fresh Questions Over US Foreign Policy o9MRiBACB6POOE8yv2uiAJ6nm1lNonfESoAuJU1Svt0cOe 8XBedY5dLmO711ztpETqH9VlShlzWDNOM94cEZAqtS4RRkLcVYn13Vp94ZO2 KXeU4RS8Tv

US President Donald Trump is facing renewed questions over his foreign policy approach after taking a tougher stance toward Oman while announcing plans to reduce some military exercises with South Korea. The moves come as Washington’s efforts to reach a broader agreement with Iran remain stalled and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue.

The developments have also highlighted a growing pattern in Trump’s second-term foreign policy: using pressure and personal relationships to pursue strategic goals, even when those tactics create friction with long-standing US allies.

Trump Targets Oman as Iran Talks Remain Stalled

Trump has warned Oman against interfering with US efforts to reach an agreement with Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Oman has been involved in negotiations with Tehran over arrangements for commercial shipping through the strategically important waterway.

The warning comes after a 60-day US-Iran memorandum of understanding expired without producing a wider peace agreement. The earlier arrangement had included commitments related to military activity, the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program.

The Strait remains a major point of disagreement. Iran has said reopening the waterway depends on Washington meeting conditions linked to the earlier agreement, including ending the naval blockade of Iranian ports, easing oil sanctions and stopping military threats.

Oman’s role is particularly sensitive because the country has historically maintained working relations with both Iran and the United States, allowing it to serve as an intermediary during periods of heightened regional tension.

South Korea Faces Pressure Over Military Exercises

Trump has also announced a reduction in US military exercises with South Korea, citing the financial cost of the drills and his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The decision has raised concerns because the United States and South Korea have maintained a longstanding defense partnership designed in large part to deter North Korea. Their forces regularly conduct joint exercises aimed at preparing for potential threats, including missile attacks, cyber operations and other forms of military escalation.

Trump has also criticized Seoul for declining to directly participate in the US campaign against Iran. South Korea, however, has indicated that it remains in discussions with Washington about ways it could contribute to maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time, Trump has continued to speak positively about his relationship with Kim, reviving memories of his previous attempts to negotiate directly with the North Korean leader.

Growing Concerns Over Trump’s Foreign Policy Strategy

The contrasting treatment of Oman, South Korea and North Korea has prompted wider debate over the direction of US foreign policy.

Trump has long emphasized unpredictability, pressure tactics and personal relationships with foreign leaders as tools for advancing American interests. Supporters argue that this approach can force other countries to make concessions that traditional diplomacy may not achieve.

Critics, however, say the latest developments risk weakening relationships with important US partners while creating uncertainty about Washington’s long-term strategy.

The Iran conflict has become a major test of that approach. With negotiations stalled, the Strait of Hormuz still at the center of the dispute and tensions involving regional allies increasing, the administration faces growing pressure to demonstrate how its threats and diplomatic efforts can produce a sustainable resolution
