Tokyo Shopping Center Incident Triggers Emergency Response
TOKYO, Japan — Approximately 20 people suffered minor injuries on Monday after a man allegedly released an unidentified substance inside a major shopping complex in Tokyo’s upscale Ginza district. Emergency responders, police officers, and hazardous-material teams quickly arrived at the scene as visitors reported a strong odor and irritation.
Authorities said the incident occurred on the ground floor of the shopping center near an automated teller machine (ATM). Witnesses reported discomfort, including irritation in the throat and respiratory passages, prompting emergency services to evacuate and assess affected individuals.
Suspect Reportedly Sprayed Substance Near ATM
According to police officials, a man is believed to have sprayed a substance near an ATM inside the luxury retail complex. Investigators have not yet publicly identified the material involved and are continuing examinations to determine its composition.
Fire department officials confirmed that roughly 20 people were injured after reports of an unusual smell spreading through the area. Most injuries were described as non-life-threatening, with affected individuals receiving medical attention at the scene or being transported for further evaluation.
Streets Closed as Hazmat Teams Examine Shoppers
Emergency crews temporarily shut down roads surrounding the shopping center while firefighters and specialized hazardous-material units conducted safety checks. Several people were seen being transported on stretchers as officials worked to identify anyone exposed to the substance.
Despite the emergency operation, parts of the building remained accessible through alternate entrances, allowing some visitors to enter and leave under controlled conditions. Authorities continue to review surveillance footage and gather witness statements as the investigation progresses.
Investigation Underway
Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while forensic teams analyze evidence collected from the scene. No fatalities have been reported, and authorities indicated that most injuries appear to be relatively minor.
The incident has drawn significant attention due to its location in Ginza, one of Tokyo’s most popular shopping and tourist destinations. Investigators are expected to provide additional updates once testing on the sprayed substance is completed.
