Texas Teen Murder Case Moves to Trial
The highly watched Texas murder trial connected to the death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf officially began this week. The case stems from a deadly confrontation during a high school track and field event in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.
Karmelo Anthony, who was 17 at the time and is now 19, faces a first-degree murder charge. He has pleaded not guilty and maintains that he acted in self-defense. If convicted, he could receive a prison sentence ranging from five years to life.
Questions Raised Over Jury Selection
The trial has drawn national attention after an all-white jury was chosen from hundreds of potential jurors. Defense lawyers objected to the removal of the final Black jurors, arguing the process unfairly excluded them. Prosecutors said those individuals were dismissed because they worked in education, and the judge accepted that explanation.
The racial backgrounds of both teenagers have fueled online debate and increased scrutiny surrounding the proceedings.
Fatal Encounter at Frisco Track Meet
According to testimony and video evidence presented in court, the incident happened after Anthony entered an opposing school’s tent during rainy weather. A disagreement followed, leading to a physical confrontation.
Prosecutors argue the stabbing was an intentional act, while defense attorneys say Anthony feared for his safety after being confronted by Metcalf and his twin brother. Witness accounts and body-camera footage have been shown to jurors as both sides present their arguments.
Anthony reportedly acknowledged the stabbing when taken into custody but insists he acted in self-defense.
Trial Expected to Continue
The case is expected to last several weeks under a court-imposed gag order. Additional witnesses, surveillance footage, and expert testimony are expected before jurors decide whether the killing was murder or an act of self-defense.
